The Winter That Planted The Seed

The Real Story Behind The Rancher’s Record Book

It wasn’t just mud and chaos that made me create The Rancher’s Record Book.

It was loss.

One particular year, we lost a lot of calves.
A terrible winter storm rolled in — wind howling, temperatures dropping, snow piling high. The kind of blizzard that stops time and breaks your heart.

The momma cows were doing everything they could to keep their babies warm.
Some even laid on them — unintentionally — just trying to shield them from the cold. But instead… they smothered them.
They were trying.
We all were.

And it wrecked us.

Every single calf lost felt like a punch to the gut.
Even though we knew we were doing everything we could, it didn’t feel like enough.

That’s when the seed was planted.

I didn’t have a fancy book back then.
Just scraps of paper, scribbled notes , and this feeling in my chest that said: We need a better way.

We needed something to help us prepare better, track more carefully, and protect what mattered most when every second counted.

Over the years, that quiet seed began to grow.
Through late nights and muddy boots.
Through notes in the truck and text messages from the field.
Through watching our daughter help tag calves, chase cows, and check pairs.

And now, after all this time…
That seed has grown into something real.

The Rancher’s Record Book isn’t just for data and checkboxes.
It’s for remembering.
It’s for the stories.
It’s for the families who live through the wild seasons and keep showing up anyway.

This book was born from heartbreak.
And built with hope.

If that winter still lives in your memory too…
If you’ve ever felt helpless while nature did what it does…
I hope this book finds its way into your hands.

Because it’s not just a tool.
It’s a part of our story.
And maybe, it can become part of yours too.

From the Ranch

We don’t do perfect out here.
We do mud, wind, heart, and hard-earned wisdom.
This blog is my way of honoring the moments — the messy, beautiful, unforgettable pieces of ranch life that deserve to be remembered.

Thanks for walking through the seasons with us.
