What Is Affiliate Marketing? The Simple Explanation I Wish I Had
After I started writing online again, I kept running into something I didn’t understand at all.
People kept talking about affiliate links, affiliate marketing, traffic, websites, and earning from home. I would see posts about it, emails about it, and ads about it, and honestly I had no idea what any of it meant.
What really confused me was how the internet seemed to know what I was thinking.
I would search for something once, and suddenly I was seeing it everywhere. Emails would show up about it, posts would pop up on Facebook, and ads would follow me around like the internet was reading my mind.
At the time, I didn’t know that a lot of that had to do with how online marketing actually works.
I kept seeing the word affiliate, and I finally realized I needed to figure out what that even meant.
In simple terms, affiliate marketing means you share a product, a link, or a service, and if someone buys through your link, you earn a small commission.
That’s it.
You don’t have to own the product.
You don’t have to ship anything.
You don’t have to deal with customers.
You’re simply sharing something, and the company pays you for sending them the customer.
Once I understood that, a lot of things started to make sense.
All those links I was clicking on…
All those people writing reviews…
All those blog posts about products…
Many of them were using affiliate links.
It wasn’t that the internet was reading my mind.
It was that the internet runs on people sharing things, and companies pay for that traffic.
The more I learned, the more I realized that blogging, writing, and building a website could actually turn into a way to earn from home, even if it started out as just a place to put my thoughts.
I didn’t figure this out overnight.
Honestly, it took me a long time to understand how all the pieces fit together.
But once I understood what affiliate marketing was, it opened up a whole different way of looking at the internet.
Instead of just scrolling and reading, I started to see how people were building things behind the scenes.
That’s what eventually led me to build my own website, learn about blogging, and start using affiliate links myself.
I’m still learning, but I understand now that affiliate marketing isn’t some mysterious thing only certain people can do.
It’s just people sharing things they use, writing about what they learn, and building something over time.
